From the New York Review of Books:
Penguin India has withdrawn Wendy Doniger’s book The Hindus: An Alternative History, after a legal case in which it was charged that the book “hurt the religious feelings of millions of Hindus.”
Pretty sure that is not a good reason to withdraw scholarly books (I’d prefer – filled with errors, plagiarism or some scholarly violation). But it seems like where we are heading in many ways. They link to an earlier essay by William Dalrymple on Indian history that is worth a read. There are so many things going on in the world I’m unaware of. And bad history is a bad thing.
