History and Theology

How do we relate history and theology? Or to be more direct, how do we deal with the historical reality that there is a significant chunk of church history where ideas differed from those evangelicals generally hold today? Generally we might hear this challenge from Catholics, but here is a similar question from a Lutheran. I think we may need to think about things like theological diversity in the early church (i.e., what things can we appeal to as universal), notions of progress or development of doctrine, biblical exegesis and how it is linked to theological frameworks and presuppositions, the actual type of authority history has, and probably other factors. It’s a hard question we need to be clear on.
