History Blues

This essay from slate is about the failure of popular histories to actually follow the most recent and best scholarship. Some of this is due to information lag (you started working on this history 10 years ago…) or due to the popular audience (either simplifying the story or trying not to offend or confuse with unexpected realities). Even accounting for those factors, it’s a problem. In all history, including religious history.
