Be Careful

There are dangers to talking about race. I think both sides of the most recent debates have oversimplified a bit. And even if not, listen carefully to thoughtful observations like this. Though family structure contributes, it is not the whole. Moreover, family structure comes out of a larger social context. We need to avoid over-simplifying. More than that, we need to recognize social, cultural and even historical dimensions of these problems. They won’t be fixed simply by telling people to do better. And they won’t be fixed without all of us engaging in working toward solutions. And perhaps a more empathetic tone will be more productive than simple screeds.
