The New Mandarins

Megan McArdle’s thoughts on some of the current cultural divide.  Among her observations:

Verbal fluency, fast reading, and a good memory are excellent qualities–in a writer.

But they are not the only qualities worth having, and the things that mandarins know are not the only things worth knowing.

I’m part of that mandarin class she describes in at least a general way (a professor with a Ph.D. should qualify). But she’s right about other kinds of wisdom.
