College Majors

Discussion of the need to refocus college on degrees that actually help people. Here’s one example:

In 2009 the United States graduated 89,140 students in the visual and performing arts, more than in computer science, math, and chemical engineering combined and more than double the number of visual-and-performing-arts graduates in 1985.

This compares to just under 38,000 in computer and information science, for example. Not that there is anything wrong with those degrees – but perhaps there would be better (and less costly) ways to provide training in these areas.
